Cultivate: A Guide To Preparing Your Capital Campaign

Preparing for a successful capital campaign is a lot like tending to a farm. Just as farming requires careful attention to the soil in the present to ensure a full harvest in the future, churches need to intentionally prepare for a capital campaign when embarking on a new vision.

When God calls your church into a new vision, it often involves bold steps of faith and significant financial investment. However, most ministries need more capital to fund this vision.

Through working with thousands of churches, we have realized there are EIGHT things you need NOW to prepare your church for a successful capital campaign later:

Understand the context of a capital campaign

Determine and outline WHY you are raising money, and why you need to raise money NOW.

There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Understand the goals

Ask the question: ‘What should be accomplished in your upcoming capital campaign?’ Regardless of denomination, geographic region, or culture, your ministry should have four goals outlined in a capital campaign.

Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in their field, and after that build your house.

Proverbs 24:7

Understand the defining moment of the campaign

This moment happens when your church members open up their budgets, and ask the question: ‘How can we be a part of this upcoming need? What is God calling our family to do?’ These defining moments lead to beautiful testimonies of the work of Christ in the lives of your congregation.

It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.

Deuteronomy 13:4

Develop a culture of generosity through volunteerism

Stewardship isn’t just about finances, it is how a person manages their time, talent, and treasures. Increasing a culture of volunteerism is the secret ingredient to a successful campaign because people often open up their lives to the concept of sacrificial giving in a sequence. People tend to give sacrificially of their time and talent BEFORE they give sacrificially of their treasure.
